Significant time and money is wasted qualifying opportunities that simply do not match your fund
Significant time/money wasted performing due diligence on opportunities, that will never go to term sheet. This is called the “100:10:1 Rule of Private Equity”. If 100 deals enter the top of the pipeline, about 10 get through initial screening (Pre-NDA) the first stage of evaluation. Of those, about 1 gets through the whole due diligence process (usually multiple stages) to funding.
The Private Equity / Venture Capital evaluation process is a very manual process with a lot of wasted interactions. Work is thrown away going from deal origination down to actually investing. There is little justification/feedback for an opportunity on why a deal is rejected
It is difficult to ensure that investors only do significant work on opportunities that have a high probability of investment. It is hard for funds to scale the number of deals they are evaluating using the same (or very few additional) resources.
